Working with the university’s interior architect Pernille Schou Folkvard and furniture suppliers Fagerhaug & Olstad AS, architectural firm Iark and were tasked with creating a contemporary space for students to meet, study, learn and collaborate.
The building cost 277m NOK to complete, and includes solar power roof generators, sprawling common areas for students to socialise and modern art throughout. Stylish lighting, tall windows, decorative plants and wooden panels throughout the interior complete the look.
“It is Scandinavian design that meets industry that meets jungle” says BI student Ingvild Normann Vardenær, while she looks around in the new BI building at Brattørkaia.
The new campus features 4 lecture halls, two private reading areas, over 40 group rooms, a library and a cafeteria, providing the various different learning environments required for a successful study destination.
An interesting addition to the project is a feature wall designed with wooden patterns similar to a cocoon. It is meant as a metaphor for the life of a student – a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, with the cocoon the home of development, much like a university develops a student.
The architects worked with furniture suppliers Fagerhaug & Olstad AS to source and specify furniture across the 8350m2 campus which is split over 5 floors. This included various seating options in both private desk-based and break out areas.

"The BI Campus building at Brattøra has received the Eiendomsprisen 2018 for exciting architecture and energy-smart solutions."
The HÅG SoFi was used in one of the auditoriums, providing comfortable and flexible individual seating. The HÅG Conventio was specified in a reading room and a large classroom. Its unique standout feature, a rocking mechanism which allows flexibility without any feet leaving the floor, make it a firm favourite in classrooms or spaces requiring quiet focus, whilst retaining comfort and agility.
In a second reading area, designated for both book and computer work, the HÅG Capisco Puls was used. A lightweight task chair offering flexibility and strong human factors, it’s slim frame provides a powerful chair without taking up too much space, whilst it’s high visual appeal adds to the environment’s aesthetics.
The breakout space includes the Offecct Meet Sofa system designed by Fattorinini+Rizzini+Partners. Created for work, informal meetings and some casual time, it was the perfect solution for a common area designated for a range of interactions, from the social to the collaborative.
Speaking about the selection process for seating, Lina Leth-Olsen, sales & interior consultant at Fagerhaug & Olstad AS said, “The architect specified products by Flokk throughout this project. It feels safe for us to provide products from Flokk, since they are made with such good quality and have a nice design. Flokk is also a trustworthy supplier which is very important, since we deal with them on a daily basis.”
